Acceptable File Formats

Introduction

BlackHills IP can process a variety of file formats to service your IP needs. The details below outline which file formats can be processed without delay and which require additional information or steps.

Preferred file formats

Our preferred file types to include with docketing communication are:

1. .pdf
2. .doc
3. .docx

Acceptable file formats if accompanied with parsing information

In addition, we can also process the following file types provided we are given an indication of the data formats and delimiters when needed, so that we can parse the data properly:

1. .xml
2. .csv
3. .json
4. .txt
5. .xls
6. .xlsx

Unknown file formats

If we receive files in a format other than those specified above, we will not be able to process it. Therefore, one of the two workflows will occur:

1. If the unknown file is accompanied by other docketable files, we will process the known files, not process the unknown file, and report back the unprocessed file.
2. If the unknown file is on its own, we will send back letting you know it could not be processed.

Corrupt pdf

Docketing received containing corrupt files will be sent back letting you know it could not be processed.

Password protected files

Docketing received with password protected files will be sent back.  You will be directed to unlock the file and email to BHIP or unlock and use our secure communication portal.
